CLICK THIS BANNER TO GO TO NARAN A whole new world built from the ground up.

The world of Naran, a text-based roleplaying game, is rich in fantasy.
You can send me your thoughts about it at Naran is very difficult to understand, unless you know the rules. Once you do, you can even play Naran on paper.
The rules to play Naran online are simple, and easy to learn.
  • The compass has two two things which may be of interest to you.
    • Press the arrow in the compass's center in order to eat.
    • Eating gives you one extra life point, but takes one food point away from you.
    • Clicking on North, South, East, or West, moves you in the aforesaid direction.
  • Another thing that may come up during your game, is that you want to save for some reason.
  • Not only is the ability to save your game allowed, but multiple games can be saved and loaded from the same machine.
  • The menu under the compass called Game Options allows you to do those things.
  • Each option is pretty straightforward. Nothing cryptic about a link marked 'Save Game' or 'Clear Game'
  • One thing worth explaining.
    • When you press 'Save Game', the confirmation box that pops up to reassure you that no errors happened also has something called a 'Game Number'.
    • Game Numbers cannot be recalled from the computers memory, so it's your job to write them down when you get them.
    • Your Game Number is the most obvious answer, the number of your game.
    • When you press 'Load Game', you will be asked for your Game Number so that you can load up your saved game.
    • If you get really far, and lose your Game Number, you don't have to start over but the solution is not user friendly.
    • Type in to your url location bar these words: 'javascript:document.write(unescape(document.cookie))'
    • After getting rid of the dialog box you get when you leave Naran, you'll be faced with a white page.
    • The only thing on it should be some lines of text, that really are different saved games, seperated by semicolons.
    • A saved game looks like infoN=X^Y^life^food...;
    • The semicolon after the ellipse (3 dots) is important.
    • The three dots are just the filler for a huge cookie that would take up to much time to show here.
    • But if no semicolon is present after the "infoN=X^Y^life^food...", then it means only one game has been saved.
    • Try and imagine splitting the huge amount of text in little bitty ones along the semicolons.
    • Your going to look at each of those little itty-bitty pieces (saved games) until you find the one you want.
    • Start the procedure with piece number one, and if that's not it, try the second one, etc...
    • The next few lines are part of that little itty bitty saved game. Pay close attention because you'll need this information.
    • "info"
    • Your game number
    • "="
    • Your X coordinate
    • "^"
    • Your Y coordinate
    • "^"
    • Your amount of life points left
    • "^"
    • Your amount of food left
    • That's all of the saved game that you are going to be able to use in order to figure out if it's your saved game.
    • If your game number was 2, your X coordinate was 17, your Y coordinate was 12, your amount of life left was 6, and your amount of food left was 9 then the game would look like this
    • info2=17^12^6^9...
    • Armed with this knowlege, thing back, and try and remember any of those details about your game. Do they look similiar to the ones shown?
    • If you get one match, try to remember more, but it'll probably be right. Try for 2 or 3 matches though.
    • If you can't find any correct ones in this game, go to the next, and so on.
    • Then look at the game number for that saved game, right next to info. That's your number. You can now reload Naran and load up your newly found game.
    • Also pat yourself on the back for some good detective work.
  • Now, about that other option, 'Clear Game'.
  • Again very simple, just feed it your Game Number and it'll clear that game.
  • READ: The confirmation box that pops up tells the truth!
  • Once a game is set to be cleared, it's gone. No way to get it back. It's simply not in the computer anymore.
  • Battling is very simple, because everything is computed automatically, and only the results are shown.
  • No dice need to be rolled, just a movement will do.
  • Finding food along the road is also done internally and randomly, as is sickness.
  • The most complex options have been broken down for you, everything simpler is so simple that it'll explain itself.
  • One more things is cheating.
  • Cheat codes are implemented, the trick is finding them.
  • I won't add them here, or how to get them, that's up to you to figure out.
  • I will give you one hint though.
  • There's a text area for eating, life, and general output.
  • What's that little box doing under everything else?

Playing Naran on paper
Playing Naran on Paper is incredibly easy to do.
You will need:
A piece of paper, divided into columns marked life, food, and level.
The first item in the life column should be 10. Same with food. And level should be 0.
A piece of paper, divided into columns marked won, lost, and tied. These will talley the amount of won, lost, and tied battles.
A seperate gamesmaster to make up what happens when you go into a room, hence whether you battle, what the room looks like, do you get any extra food or life.
A die of 6 sides to be used to determine the outcome of battles, illness, finding food, hence the random die.
A pencil or pen.

GENERAL RULES FOR MOVEMENT
The Gamesmaster should describe the room the person is in. Also, the gamesmaster must make choices if food or life is found, in which case add another point to the chosen location.
Also the Gamesmaster should choose whether a battle takes place. If so, check out a couple of lines ahead for a minute to see die rolling rules for battle.
After asking the person which direction he or she would like to go, hence north, south, east, or west, the gamesmaster must instruct the player to role the die, because the person is moving. The rules for the die role are shown in the GENERAL DIE ROLLING RULES.
Also, the gamemaster must always be checking the GENERAL LEVEL RULES to see if something needs to be done.
Also, after the rolling is completed, and everything else is done, the gamemaster should then announce that the person playing has moved into another room going in the direction he or she chose.
Then the gamesmaster must restart the GENERAL RULES FOR MOVEMENT for the next room.
GENERAL DIE ROLLING RULES
If it lands on 2 or 1, the person is ill and 1 life point is subtracted from the total on the column marked life.
If it lands on 4 or 3, the person has found food and 1 food point is added to the total on the column marked food.
If it lands on 6 or 5, the person has been attacked, and must role the die again.
DIE ROLLING RULES FOR BATTLE
Role the die.
If it lands on 2 or 1, the battle is lost.
If it lands on 4 or 3, the battle is tied.
If it lands on 6 or 5, the battle is won.
If the battle was won, the gamesmaster should choose a reward, perhaps extra food or life, for the person. Also he or she must add one to the talley of won battles.
If it was tied, the gamesmaster must add one to the talley of tied battles.
If it was lost, the gamesmaster should chose a punishment, perhaps a subtraction from the total of food or life for the person. Also he or she must add one to the talley of lost battles.
GENERAL LEVEL RULES
The gamesmaster must decide certain things in order for the person playing's level to grow.
How much battles must be lost before the level decreases, how much battles must be won before the level increases... These are conditions that must be chosen before gameplay by the gamesmaster.
Also, for a really interesting game, if your the gamesmaster, you can give random levels also. Just check out ADDING LEVELS TO THE GENERAL RULES FOR MOVEMENT AND GENERAL DIE ROLLING RULES
ADDING LEVELS TO THE GENERAL RULES FOR MOVEMENT AND GENERAL DIE ROLLING RULES
The six sided die, when rolled generally, will now be played like this.
If it lands on 2 or 1, nothing happens, but the gamesmaster should make up some sort of interesting description to say.
If it lands on 4 or 3, the person has been attacked and must role again using DIE ROLLING RULES FOR BATTLE.
If it lands on 6 or 5, the person now has lady luck behind him or her, and with something definitly in his or her future, must role again without any specific rules (see below).
If the person playing must role again and doesn't have to use any specific rules then play the die like this.
If it lands on 2 or 1, the person is ill and 1 life point is subtracted from the total on the column marked life.
If it lands on 4 or 3, the person has found food and 1 food point is added to the total on the column marked food.
If it lands on 6 or 5, the person has found a level modifier, (you choose up or down for the level) and the the level column is marked accordingly.

NOTES:
If health goes below zero, the person cannot live, and the game starts over.
If the person wants, he or she can eat food ONLY if he or she has any. It will replenish 1 life point.
